Leeds Building Society In January 1845, a group of far-sighted and community-minded people came together in Holbeck to form the Leeds Union Operative Land and Building Society. Their aim was to help one another secure the property that would enable them to build a home for their families. From such humble beginnings, the Leeds Building Building Society came into being. Formally established in 1875, we have grown strongly and securely, yet still remain true to our ideal of mutuality – owned by our members and working to the benefit of all borrowers and investors. Today, we stand at the leading edge of financial services, a 21st century success story – the UK’s 7th largest Building Society, a multi-billion asset organisation, with over 622,000 members and a nationwide network of more than 57 branches (including a branch in Gibraltar) offering an extensive range of mortgage, investment and other financial services products. In March 2005, at the Society's Annual General Meeting, our members made the historic decision to change our name to Leeds Building Society and this became effective on 12 September 2005. We offer our members great value and superb customer service. Dynamic and forward thinking, we combine the latest technology (such as our online Internet Mortgage Service) with traditional friendly customer service.
